Monday, July 13 Afternoon


Once the boys woke from their naps we decided to go on a golf cart ride to explore the campgrounds.  Rocky loved riding on the golf cart! He kept looking back and laughing.  We made our way to the Ranger Station to get some ice and check out the gift shop. Once back at the cabin we made some dinner before checking out the splash pad.

When we arrived at the splash pad there were a few families there, but when we walked in everyone left so we had the whole splash pad to ourselves! The boys loved all the different fountains.  Teddy does not like water in is face or eyes so I was surprised to see that he was actually going under the different fountains. Rocky was all about trying to catch the water and splash.  We stayed for about 30 minutes before going back to the cabin to change.

The plan was to check out the jumping pillows, but it was closed by the time we got there so instead we went on a playground tour throughout the grounds.  We'd find a playground and play for 10ish minutes (or until another family came) and then go on a golf cart ride to find the next one. I appreciate that Jellystone has hand sanitizer placed all throughout the grounds. I find it to be relatively easy to social distance at the grounds and most people are aware of social distancing. 

Once we played we came back to the cabin to give Rocky a bath while Thom and Teddy built a campfire in the fire ring.  While at the Ranger Station we purchased stuff for s'mores and magical fire powder.  Teddy tried to roast a marshmallow but ended up throwing his stick (with his marshmallow) on the ground so I roasted one for him.  He really enjoyed it! The magical fire powder turned the fire different colors; it was very pretty. After getting Teddy to bed Thom and I enjoyed the last of the fire. Thom chatted with his friends on the phone while I stargazed on the picnic table.  A perfect end to the day!

This morning we started out back at Mammoth Cave National Park. Yesterday we did below ground of Mammoth Cave, and today, we decided to do above ground. We began on the same path we did yesterday and stopped at the historical entrance of the cave of Mammoth Cave. Because it was before tours started there were no rangers, tours or people around.  We were able to walk down the stairs to the main entrance and then back up. Teddy seemed satisfied with seeing just that much of the cave today because it was cold. Note to self: if going on cave tours in future, bring a sweatshirt! Our next destination began at the cave entrance. I had read that the River Styx Spring was beautiful and an easy trail for all skill levels. As we made our way to the spring, Thom pointed out that it was easy because the entire way was downhill....this made me a little concerned about our return.  I was under the impression that we could go down to the spring, but it was actually an overlook over the spring.  From t

After leaving Chris and Aribi’s this morning we made our way to St. Louis to go to the Arch. Teddy was there when he was little, but since then it has become a National Park. Due to COVID we couldn’t go to the top, but we were able to go in the new visitor center and museum.  We’ve had an amazing trip!! As I write this we are 45 minutes from home. Looking forward to seeing Penny! Lots of great memories made!

It has been another beautiful, relaxing day. I got to sleep in while Thom got up with the boys. Aribi brought over some legos so the boys were entertained. Thom and I cooked a pork butt for pulled pork tacos for lunch.  While the kids napped Sarah and I enjoyed some pool time to ourselves. After some pool time Sarah and I returned to Chris and Aribi’s house because we thought the boys wanted to swim without kids too. When we arrived we found that it was nap time for everyone! All were sleeping.  I grabbed my book and sat on their patio for awhile...and fell asleep.  The temperature, light breeze and outdoor sounds were just too much to not sleep. Once everyone was awake we headed back to the pool for our last swim. Teddy has been practicing jumping off the side of the pool into my arms and decided he would try the diving board. It took some convincing, but he did it! He was so proud. Thom tried to do a flip...it didn’t turn out so pretty! For dinner we tried a local place, Foxys.
